Before we get into the decibels of vacuum cleaners, let us explain a little bit about how decibels work and at what level is it too loud.

Decibels are used to measure the intensity of the sound they make while they are turned on. Some sounds are low and comfortable to listen to while others are too loud that you need to wear ear protection.

It is recommended by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to wear hearing protection at levels from 85 dB and above. As this level of noise can damage your hearing over time which then leaves decibels from 70 dB and below is acceptable to work with

Some examples of common sounds to give you an idea of the different noise levels:

  • Two-person normal conversation: 60 dB
  • Refrigerators: 50 dB
  • Washing machines: 50-75 dB
  • TVs: depending on the set volume of your choice, 70 dB
  • Doorbells: around 70-80 dB
  • Lawnmowers: 60-95 dB
  • Garbage Disposal: 80 dB
  • Vacuum cleaners: 56-80 dB

As you can see, vacuum cleaners generally operate at a noise level between 56 – 80 dB. A full-sized vacuum cleaner outputs a noise level of 70-80 dB, which is extremely loud and is the same as a garbage disposal.

These high levels of decibels are uncomfortable to your ears and can be extremely stressful to anyone nearby the vacuum cleaner. You will not be able to hear much of anything else around you like if the phone was ringing.

These days many people are on the hunt for vacuum cleaners that are quiet. Although a vacuum cleaner will never be completely quiet, many on the market today are considered to be extremely quiet. These vacuum cleaners have a noise level of 65 dB or less.

Examples of quiet vacuum cleaners:

  • Miele Complete C3 canister vacuum cleaner -  56–67 dB
  • Eufy Robo Vac 11S – In quiet operation mode - 56 dB
  • MOOSOO K17 Cordless stick - 65 dB
  • Ecovac Deebot OZMO 950 robot – 53 dB
  • Coredy Robot Vacuum Cleaner - 45–65 dB
  • Hoover Commercial hush Tone Vacuum Cleaner – In the hushed mode up to 62 dB
  • Electrolux EL 4021A Silent Performer -  65 dB
  • NaceCare Henry HVR 200 canister – 47 dB

Places to find the noise level for a type of vacuum cleaner

If it does not state anywhere on the label or package, you could check the specification of the vacuum online or check the user manual.

The vacuum cleaner has gone from quiet to suddenly noisy

What if you have a different kind of query, like when you first purchased your vacuum it was quiet. But all of a sudden it has gotten much louder?

We have put together some tips on finding the reason why.

Check the filter

The main reason for a vacuum cleaner going from quiet to suddenly noisy is a dirty filter. When the filter is dirty or clogged, the vacuum will work harder to suck up the dirt that leads to a louder noise.

If you pay close attention to your vacuum cleaner, you will notice that it has also lost power. It is then best to wash and wait for it to dry completely or replace the filter and then check to see if it sounds better.

Clogged up Hose

If the hose has, something lodged inside it will often make a loud sound when the air is trying to flow past it. It will also seem that your vacuum cleaner has no suction power.

Disconnect the hose from the vacuum cleaner, clean the hose thoroughly, and make sure that whatever was lodged inside is out.

Check the vacuum’s fan

If the fan of your vacuum is broken or clogged, it could be the cause of it making a louder noise. Clean it if it is clogged or replace the fan if there is any sign of damage.

Check if the brush bearing is broken

A broken brush bearing can often cause more vibrations when used, making the vacuum sound louder. To decrease the noises check if the brush bearing is broken and replace it.

There is nothing more irritating to you and those around than the loud noise of a vacuum cleaner. If you would like to keep the peace and enjoy cleaning your home, it is best to know how many decibels is a vacuum cleaner.  What is safe and what is too loud by always remembering the lower the decibels are the quieter the vacuum cleaner will be.
