Shark Vacuum Not Turning on

You are all fired up and ready to vacuum your home, however, your Shark vacuum won’t turn on. A Shark vacuum not turning on is something that can happen to all of us.

The reason and the solution could be something simple or it could require a  more technical solution with the help of a professional. Sometimes when the problem is too severe, the best solution is to buy a new vacuum cleaner.

However, before you panic, in this guide, we provide a list of items to go through, check, and solve the reason for your shark vacuum not turning on.

List of items on your Shark vacuum cleaner to check

  • The plug and electrical outlet
  • The vacuum cleaner power switch
  • The power cord
  • The dirt container and filter
  • Your home’s circuit breaker
  • Shark vacuum cleaner motor

Electrical outlet and vacuum’s plug

Your first step is the obvious check. Your vacuum cleaner needs a source of power to operate, be it with a power cable or with rechargeable batteries.

  • Check whether your vacuum cleaner is receiving power
  • Check if the electrical outlet is working by plugging in another appliance and turn it on.
  • If the outlet is not working, try another electrical outlet
  • If it is working, ensure the plug of the vacuum cleaner is firmly inserted in the socket
  • If none of the electrical outlets work, move on to the step for checking the circuit breaker of your home.

Shark vacuum’s power switch

If the electrical outlet is working and the plug is firmly in the wall socket move on to the Shark vacuums power switch.

We all have moments when our minds fail us and forget to press the “I” on the power switch that turns the machine on.

Check if the switch located on the top of the handle is in the on position. If you have turned the vacuum on and your shark navigator vacuum won't turn on or if your shark rotator vacuum won't turn on, keep in mind the switch could still be the problem if it is faulty.

Before you rush out to replace the switch, complete all the necessary checks by moving onto the next step of checking the power cord.

Power Cord

Often the reason your shark vacuum just stopped working, is a damaged power cord. The power cord of a vacuum cleaner is low on the list of vacuum cleaner maintenance and concerns. It takes a lot of abuse, from pulling it just that extra bit to reach an area in our homes to moving around sharp corners that cause damage to the cable.

Operating a vacuum cleaner with visible cuts and tears to the power cord does not only cause loss of power to the cleaner but is also extremely dangerous. Damaged vacuum cleaner cords are often the causes of electric shocks and house fires.

  • Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet
  • Take your time to carefully examine the entire length of the power cord
  • If the outer insulation has cuts or if the cords inner wiring is visible
  • Decide to repair or replace the power cord

If the power cord is still in excellent shape, move onto checking the dirt canister and filters.

Dirt Canister and Filters

Often a reason for a shark navigator vacuum troubleshooting or a shark rotator professional vacuum troubleshooting is something as simple as a full dirt canister or dirty clogged filters.

Usually, a full dirt canister is full your vacuum cleaner will stop picking up the dirt. Dirty filters, damaged filters which need replacing, or incorrectly placed filters would usually cause your Shark vacuum to lose suction power. However, if you do not properly maintain them, it could be the reason why your shark vacuum stopped working.

  • Empty and clean the dirt canister
  • Ensure you clean the filters every two to three months
  • Check if you re-inserted the filters correctly after your last filter cleaning task
  • Always replace filters if they are damaged.

If your dirt canister and filters are clean and do not need replacing, then check the circuit breaker for your home.

The Circut Breaker of Your Home

It is possible that the reason why your shark rotator vacuum stopped working is that the circuit breaker of your home has tripped.

Once a circuit breaker has tripped due to the power a vacuum cleaner draws from it, there will also be no power to the electrical plug outlet.

Go to the area in your home where the circuit breaker is located and check if your circuit breaker has a reset button. If it does, simply press the button and the electricity will be restored to your home.

If not, check if all the switches are facing the same way and are in the on position. A tripped switch caused by a vacuum cleaner is usually the one for the wall plugs.

If the switch is facing the opposite direction than the other switches, it means it has tripped. Flip it to the correct position and see if the power to your vacuum cleaner has been restored via the wall outlet.

The Shark Motor

If none of the above-mentioned solutions work, then you could be dealing with the issue of your shark vacuum motor not working.

You will need to take your vacuum cleaner to a vacuum repair professional to check and replace the motor.

Be warned: Often the cost of replacing a Shark vacuum motor can be more expensive than buying a new vacuum cleaner.

As you can see, several problems could be the cause of your Shark vacuum not turning on. However, don’t as this checklist and regular cleaning of the dirt canister and filters should resolve the problem to my shark vacuum is not working. If you do not succeed in getting your vacuum working again, then it is probably a good idea to dispose of the old vacuum cleaner and buy a new Shark vacuum cleaner.
